Why is the Lord Jesus’ coming something to be joyful about? What even is joy? Is it possible to obtain at all?
The Bible has much to say about the topic. Biblical joy is different from the world’s idea of joy. The world often confuses joy with happiness. Happiness depends on our circumstances. When we have a bad day, we are not happy. When things are good, we are happy. Joy is more than just the excitement that comes from a good experience or a favorable set of circumstances. Joy can live in us, and be sustained even when our circumstances are unfavorable or disadvantageous. Why? Because joy comes from the Lord, not the world.
When we are tempted to become discouraged and forget the joy that comes from the Lord, let us remember the hope of our future! God is the One Who shows us the way of life. He is the One Who gives us the joy of His presence. Ultimately, His presence will be the fullness of our joy because we have the pleasure of living with Him forever!
